Google Ads for Businesses That Want the Phone to Ring
Google Ads puts your business at the top of the results the moment someone in your area searches for the work you do. Done well, it is the fastest lead source a trade business has. Done badly, it is a monthly bill for clicks from job seekers, students and people three regions away. The difference is management: which searches you show for, which you block, where you show, what the ad says, where the click lands and whether anyone is checking the numbers every week.
We have managed Google Ads for Auckland and New Zealand trades since 2015. Our campaigns are structured around the jobs you want - not every service you could theoretically do - with location targeting set to the suburbs you will actually drive to, negative keywords maintained weekly, and call tracking so every lead is attributed to the keyword that produced it. If your website cannot convert the clicks, we say so first; see our website design service. If you want leads that do not cost per click, see SEO Auckland.

Review My Google AdsWhat Google Ads Management Includes
| Included | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Campaign structure | Separate campaigns for each service and, where it pays, each area, so budget goes to the jobs that make you money and the reporting tells you which ones those are. |
| Keyword and match-type strategy | Exact and phrase match on the terms that convert; broad match only where the data supports it. Search terms reviewed every week. |
| Negative keywords | A trade-specific block list maintained weekly - jobs, courses, DIY, suppliers, far-away suburbs - so the budget stops leaking. |
| Location targeting | Set to the suburbs and regions you will travel to, with "presence" rather than "interest" targeting so you do not pay for searches from other cities. |
| Call-only and call extensions | Campaigns whose only action is a phone call, plus call buttons on every search ad, with tracking numbers so calls count as conversions. |
| Ad copy and extensions | Ads written for your trade, with sitelinks, callouts, location and price extensions tested against each other. |
| Landing pages | The click lands on a page about that service with the number at the top and a short form, not the home page. We build or fix them as part of the work. |
| Conversion tracking | Calls, forms and click-to-call on mobile all measured in Google Ads and Google Analytics, so bidding optimises toward leads rather than clicks. |
| Weekly optimisation | Bids, budgets, search terms, ad tests and location reports reviewed every week, with changes noted in your monthly report. |
| Monthly report | Calls, leads, cost per lead, spend and what changed - one page, in plain language, plus live figures in your client dashboard. |
Where Google Ads Budgets Go Wrong
When we review an existing trade account, the same five problems appear in most of them. Fixing these alone often halves the cost per lead before anything new is built:
- Broad match with no negatives - the account shows for "plumbing jobs", "plumbing course" and "how to fix a tap", and pays for every click.
- Targeting by interest, not presence - Google's default shows your ad to anyone "interested in" Auckland, including people in other countries researching a move.
- Every click lands on the home page - the customer searched for gutter replacement and has to find it themselves. Most do not.
- No conversion tracking, or the wrong kind - if calls are not counted, Google optimises for clicks, and clicks are cheap for a reason. We have seen accounts counting every page view as a lead.
- Nobody looking - the account was set up once and left. Search terms drift, competitors change, and the waste compounds monthly.
Google Ads Alongside Facebook, Instagram and SEO
Google Ads reaches people who are searching right now. Facebook and Instagram reach homeowners who are not searching yet but will be, and they do it with photos of your real work; we run those through our lead generation service, often to the same landing pages. SEO earns the organic positions under your ads so you hold two spots on the page and pay for one. For most trades the right sequence is Ads first for immediate work, SEO building underneath, and social campaigns once there are enough job photos to feed them. We plan the three together so the budget is not fighting itself.
How a Google Ads Campaign Runs
Brief
The services you want more of, the ones you do not, your service area, your capacity and what a job is worth to you. That last figure sets the budget.
Build
Campaigns, ad groups, keywords, negatives, ads, extensions, landing pages and conversion tracking, in your own Google Ads account.
Launch and tune
Live within days. The first four to six weeks are spent reading search terms and calls, cutting waste and moving budget to what converts.
Report and scale
Once cost per lead is stable and you are happy with the enquiries, we scale the campaigns that work and add the next service or area.
Google Ads for Auckland Trades
The trades where Google Ads works hardest are the ones where the customer needs someone today: emergency electricians, plumbers, towing, garage doors, heat pumps, locksmiths, demolition and site clearance. Some of the businesses we build and advertise for:

Why Choose Click n Call to Run Your Google Ads
We are a small Auckland team, so the person who builds your account is the person who reviews it every week and answers the phone when you have a question. The account is yours, the fee is fixed, there is no minimum spend and no lock-in.
We also build the websites and run the SEO for many of the same businesses, so we see the whole picture - what Ads tell us converts feeds the SEO plan, and what the website does with a click decides how much a lead costs. Our published guides on negative keywords, location targeting and spotting wasted spend show exactly how we work an account.
- Fixed management fee
- No minimum spend
- No lock-in
- Call tracking
- Weekly optimisation
- You own the account
- Trades specialists
Google Ads FAQs
How much does Google Ads management cost?
Two separate amounts. Your ad spend goes to Google directly from your own account and you set it. Our management fee is a fixed monthly figure quoted up front, based on how many campaigns and locations you run. There is no percentage of spend, no minimum spend and no lock-in contract.
How much should a tradie spend on Google Ads in Auckland?
Enough to win a handful of clicks a day in your area, which for most trades in Auckland means a modest daily budget to start. We set it from the actual cost per click for your terms, then adjust once we can see the cost per lead. Our blog has a full guide to setting a digital marketing budget for Auckland trades.
How quickly will I get leads?
Campaigns can be live within a few days and the phone can ring the first day. A reliable cost per lead takes four to six weeks of data and adjustment.
Do I own the Google Ads account?
Yes. The account is created in your name and you keep the history, the conversion data and the access if you ever leave. We manage it through our agency access, which you can remove at any time.
What is a call-only campaign?
An ad that shows only on phones and whose only action is to call you - no website visit in between. For emergency and urgent trades it is often the cheapest lead there is. We explain how it works in our guide to call-only Google Ads for Auckland trades.
What are negative keywords and why do they matter?
Terms you tell Google never to show your ad for: "jobs", "course", "DIY", "free" and the like. Without them a trade account can waste a third of its budget on people who will never hire anyone. We review them every week.
Will you report on results?
Every month you get calls, form leads, cost per lead and spend in one page, and your client dashboard shows enquiries as they arrive. Call tracking means you can hear which keyword produced which call.
Google Ads or SEO - which should I do first?
If you need work now, Google Ads. If you can wait and want leads without a per-click cost, SEO. Most clients run Ads while the SEO builds and reduce spend as organic leads take over.
