Why Google Ads Works So Well for Trades
Nobody searches "emergency plumber" for fun. The person typing it has water on the floor, and the first trade business that answers gets the job. Google Ads puts you at the top of that search in your area within days of starting, which is why it is the fastest lead source a tradie has. It is also the easiest to waste money on: broad keywords with no negatives, ads showing to people in other cities, clicks landing on a home page that buries the phone number, and nobody checking the account after the first month. We have run Google Ads for trades since 2015, and the difference between an account that costs money and one that makes it is almost always management, not budget.
The full description of what our management covers is on the Google Ads management Auckland page. This page is about how it applies to trades specifically.

Get an EstimateHow We Set Up Google Ads for a Trade Business
| Decision | What we do and why |
|---|---|
| Which jobs | Campaigns for the services you want more of - not everything you could do. A roofer who wants re-roofs does not need to pay for gutter-cleaning clicks. |
| Which suburbs | Presence targeting on the areas you will drive to. A South Auckland plumber does not pay for Orewa. |
| Urgent vs planned | Call-only campaigns for emergency work (burst pipe, no power, locked out); search campaigns with quote forms for planned work (renovation, re-roof, new fence). |
| Negative keywords | Jobs, courses, apprenticeships, DIY, suppliers, wholesalers, other regions - blocked from day one and reviewed weekly. Without this a trade account leaks a third of its budget. |
| Ad copy | Licensed, insured, years in business, same-day or free quote, the suburb, and the number. Tested against alternatives. |
| Landing pages | The click lands on the page about that service with the number at the top and a short form. If your site does not have one, we build it. |
| Conversion tracking | Calls, click-to-call and forms counted as leads, so Google optimises toward phone calls rather than clicks. Every call is attributed to its keyword. |
| Hours | Ads scheduled for when you can actually answer, or a call-answering arrangement so after-hours leads are not lost. Missed calls are the biggest leak in trade lead generation. |
Trades Where Google Ads Pays Fastest
Any trade can use Google Ads, but it pays fastest where the customer needs someone today and the job value covers the click cost comfortably: emergency electricians and plumbers, towing, garage doors, heat pumps, locksmiths, drainlayers, demolition and site clearance, waterproofing and roof repairs. Some of the businesses we build and advertise for:

Google Ads and the Rest of Your Marketing
Ads bring work now. SEO for tradies builds the organic position underneath so you hold two spots on the page and pay for one. Facebook and Instagram ads reach homeowners who are not searching yet, using your job photos. And a tradie website that converts is what decides your cost per lead in every channel. See the marketing for tradies overview for how we sequence them.
How we run an account, written down: negative keywords, location targeting, call-only campaigns, spotting wasted spend and why missed calls cost more than clicks.
Google Ads for Tradies FAQs
How much should a tradie spend on Google Ads?
Enough to win a handful of clicks a day in your area. For most trades in a New Zealand city that is a modest daily budget to start. We set it from the actual cost per click for your terms and adjust once we can see what a lead costs. Our guide to setting a digital marketing budget for Auckland trades walks through the maths.
What does management cost?
A fixed monthly fee quoted up front, separate from your ad spend, which goes to Google from your own account. No percentage of spend, no minimum spend, no lock-in contract.
How fast will the phone ring?
Campaigns can be live within days and the first calls often come the first day. A stable cost per lead takes four to six weeks of search-term and call data.
What is a call-only ad?
An ad that shows only on phones and whose only action is to call you - no website visit. For urgent trades it is often the cheapest lead available, and it works even if your website is weak. We explain it in our guide to call-only Google Ads for Auckland trades.
Will I get calls from job seekers and salespeople?
Not if the negative keywords are maintained. Words like jobs, course, apprenticeship, wholesale and supplier are blocked from day one and the search-term report is reviewed weekly for new ones.
Can you target only the suburbs I cover?
Yes, and we target people physically in those areas rather than people "interested in" them, which is Google's default and pays for searches from other cities. See our guide to Google Ads location targeting for Auckland trades.
Do I own the Google Ads account?
Yes. It is created in your name with its history and conversion data, and we manage it through agency access you can remove any time.
Should I do Google Ads or SEO first?
If you need work now, Ads. If you can wait and want leads without a per-click cost, SEO. Most tradies run Ads while the SEO builds and wind spend back as organic leads take over.
